As many people say, one person’s trash is another’s treasure. So, before you throw everything out in the new year, be sure to ask yourself whether you can recycle, reuse or donate it.
According to studies made by Sainsbury’s Bank, more than 5% of people re-gift presents they received in previous years – saving them from buying new ones or letting them go to waste and harming the environment.
5 simple steps to keep festive materials out of landfill sites:
- Recycle Christmas cards and wrapping paper
After taking your Christmas cards down, don’t just throw them in the general waste bin. Can you use any of them to create gift tags or handmade cards for next year? If you can’t, make sure you put them in your paper recycling bin.If you’re left with rolls of wrapping paper, put them away for next Christmas and save yourself some money.
- Put Christmas decorations away for next year
From door wreaths and candles to festive ornaments and baubles, you don’t necessarily need to get new ones every year. You can use them again and again. Have a good sort through your collection of Christmas decorations and decide if there’s anything you can get rid of to free up some storage space in your loft.
- Cut your Christmas tree into smaller parts
Artificial Christmas trees are great. You lift them out of the box and cover them in tinsel, baubles and colourful fairy lights. Then when Christmas is over, you simply remove all the decorations and pop it back in the box. If you opted for the real thing this Christmas, you can cutit into smaller pieces so it can fit in your green wheelie bin – ready to be collected by the local council. Or you could drive it to the local tip.
- Donate food and drink
After endless Christmas feasts, you’re bound to have food and drink leftover and rather than throwing it away, why not put it to good use? Local food banks are always looking for generous donations –no matter how big or small.
